This isn’t just decoration — it’s a piece of Newcastle’s social history, once part of the world-famous Oxford Galleries and its Pink Elephant Cocktail Bar.

The Oxford Galleries was the meeting place in Newcastle from the 1920s onwards. Shop girls on their half-day closing would gather there for tea dances, meeting men who were “supposed to be at work” or even at the football. On Saturdays, the tea dance was a fixture of social life, drawing crowds from across the North East.

The venue was so iconic it even featured in the 1971 Michael Caine film Get Carter, cementing its place in cultural memory. Though the Oxford Galleries is long gone, its legacy as Newcastle’s most famous dance hall remains strong.

Our mirror, once part of that glamorous setting, now finds its home in Alnwick. Guests at The Bondgate Boutique can pause on the staircase, catch their reflection, and know they are looking into a slice of history — a reminder of nights of dancing, music, and romance in one of Newcastle’s most celebrated venues.
