Thrunton Woodland Walks
A Winter Wonderland on Our Doorstep
If you thought strolling through woodland was strictly for summertime, a winter walk at Thrunton Woods might just change your mind. Just 9 miles from The Bondgate Boutique via the B6341, this well-maintained local beauty spot has something to offer whatever the time of year.
Planted on two sandstone slopes, Thrunton Woods has clearly marked trails to suit different abilities and provides spectacular views of the dramatic local scenery. Starting from the main road-side car park (free throughout the year), there are two main trails. The Crag Top Walk (green markers) is 1 mile long and pretty easy going, whilst the Castle Hill Walk (red markers) is 5 miles long with a long ascent. The area is also popular with mountain bikers and horse riders.
The trails take in some truly stunning avenues, lined with mature trees and a huge variety of plants. Many visitors find themselves enjoying an encounter with the local wildlife, including hares, rabbits, badgers, foxes and deer. An early visit on a frosty morning is like entering a magical world where nature’s stillness and harmony remain blissfully unaffected by our busy world.
Take a hot flask with you and wrap up warmly for your walk. Heavy rain can make some of the smaller trails muddy so remember your wellies. Whatever the weather, Thrunton Woods is a magical place that you’ll remember for a lifetime.
